Job Title: Pump Mechanic

General Job Description:

Trouble shoot, diagnose and repair domestic pump systems; make decisions on the job site, communicate effectively with customers regarding situations when appropriate, and provide good customer service. Diligently fill out paperwork legible and accurately.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

PUMP INSTALLATION AND SERVICE
  • Abandon agricultural and commercial wells
  • Trouble shoot, diagnose and repair pump systems
  • Install new pump systems – storage tank systems with led lag systems
  • Install plumbing, including PVC, copper, ABS and steel pipe fittings
  • Solder copper pipes and fittings
  • Build, install and maintain electrical panels up to 440 volts, 1 and 3 phases
  • Build and install power poles
  • Chemically treat and develop water well (swab, bail and test)
  • Run liners – bail, brush, swab and perforate existing water wells
  • Be self-sufficient on job sites, making decisions and implementing what is best for our customer and the Company.
  • Set up on job site, keep work site clean and orderly, break down, clean up and demobilize work site, taking customer into consideration
  • Operate pump hoist trucks with 3-ton to 5-ton lifting capacity, trenching machine and electric well bobs
  • Install and read water flow meters
  • Work with 120, 230, and 440 volts of electricity – 1 & 3 phase
  • Fish out dropped pumps
  • Well test 4-24 hours
  • Loading and unloading materials
  • Test new agricultural and commercial wells
  • Use of basic electrical, plumbing and mechanical skills
  • Connect ducts
  • Drive couplings
  • Level and bolt down pumps
  • Hazmat trained and certified
PAPER WORK
  • Fill out timecard completely with legible name, date, appropriate work order information and time accounting of each job
  • Fill out work orders completely and accurately and turn in daily
  • Fill out well logs and test forms with results of measuring devices; include casing size, condition of casing, pressure tank info, well depth, static water level, g.p.m., draw down, correct pumping times, recovery levels and times, color and temperature of water, any sand that the well might make and condition of plumbing and electrical systems.
  • Prepare neat, legible customer invoices, if needed for a COD account

Secondary Duties:

  • Diagnose and invent methods to solve unique problems
  • Duty rotation (approximately one week every two months)
  • Maintain assigned Weeks service vehicle (keep clean, change oil, lube, and fuel)

Special Training/Experience/Qualifications:

  • Must have basic math skills to calculate figures, amounts and formulas for pump curves
  • Basic electrical and plumbing skills
  • Must have good communication and customer relation skills to be able to communicate problems, deal with getting cash up front
  • Must be able to work well with fellow employees and management.
  • Must have basic knowledge of electronics and can read basic schematics.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude necessary
  • Should know the basics of how most pumps operate and have a good understanding of how to operate all types of equipment (pump rig, trencher, electric well bob, etc.)
  • Must be willing to work out-of-town when occasionally requested
  • Must know how to maintain assigned Weeks’ vehicle
  • On the job training

Hours:

7:00 am – 5:00 p.m., M-F (employee is expected to be punctual); some mandatory overtime, especially in the summer months

Location:

Job duties will primarily be located out of doors on various work sites – some out of town.

Reporting Relationship:

The Pump Mechanic reports directly to the Pump Department Supervisor.

Vehicles Driven:

2-axle service vehicle, pickup, forklift

Types of Machines/Tools Used:

Steam cleaner, trenching machine, blowtorch, hand tools, power saw, electric well bob, large wrenches, shovel, air compressor, welder

Certificates, Licenses:

Valid CA driver’s license in good standing.

Required Language/Writing Skills:

  • Ability to speak and write fluent English
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety/environmental/employment rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedural manuals, and work orders.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with fellow employees, customers, management and general public both in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to keep documents, legible notes, prepare change orders and invoices.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is often very loud. Work is sometimes performed in cramped, difficult to reach areas such as crawl spaces under homes

Personal Protective Equipment Required:

When the job warrants the following PPE must be worn (Refer to Employee Safety Handbook): Hardhat (OSHA approved); safety shoes; safety glasses, gloves, earplugs, safety goggles, welding goggles, welding hoods, safety belts, respirators, Tyvek suits, and dust masks are also available when needed. The Company supplies necessary PPE except for safety shoes and regular work gloves.

General Physical Movement Required:

Twisting, stooping, bending, squatting, kneeling, climbing, lifting, and carrying.
